Slovenia Škofljica History: A Rich and Varied Past
Slovenia Škofljica is a small town located in the north-eastern part of Slovenia. It is the administrative center of the Municipality of Škofljica and is located in the Central Slovenia Region. The town has a rich and varied history, stretching back to the 11th century.
The earliest known settlement in the area was a small village, which was first mentioned in a document from 1063. This document was issued by the Bishop of Freising, who was a vassal of the Patriarch of Aquileia. The village was known as Schoflitza and was situated on the banks of the Sava River.
In the 12th century, the settlement was taken over by the Counts of Celje, who built a castle in the area. This castle was later destroyed by the Turks in 1515. During the 16th century, the area was ruled by the Habsburgs and then by the Venetians in the 17th century.
In the 18th century, the area was annexed by the Austrian Empire and it became part of the Duchy of Carniola. During this period, the town was renamed Škofljica. During World War II, the town was occupied by the Germans and then by the Italians. After the war, the town became part of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. In 1991, Slovenia declared independence and Škofljica has been part of the independent Republic of Slovenia ever since.
