The Palm Jumeirah: An Introduction to the Dubai Wonder

The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial archipelago, created using land reclamation by the Dubai government, located off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is one of three planned islands, known collectively as the Palm Islands, that will extend the Dubai coastline by over 100 kilometers and add 520 kilometers of beachfront property. It is the smallest and the original of the three Palm Islands, and is the only one that has been completed.

History of the Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah was the first of the three Palm Islands to be constructed, with construction beginning in 2001. The island was created by land reclamation from the sea, with sand being dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf and sprayed onto the required area. The island was completed in 2008, and is now a major tourist destination in Dubai, as well as a residential area.

The island is in the shape of a palm tree, with a trunk, 17 fronds, and a crescent shaped breakwater surrounding it. The crescent is made up of over 7 million tons of rock and sand, and is over 11 kilometers long. The island is 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers at its widest point.
