Asia Mongolia Geography: Exploring the Land of the Eternal Blue Sky



Mongolia is a landlocked country located in East Asia, bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. It is the world's 18th largest country, with an area of 1,564,116 square kilometers (603,909 sq mi). The landscape of Mongolia is vast and varied, ranging from the Gobi Desert in the south to the alpine forests of the north. Mongolia has a continental climate, with long, cold winters and short, hot summers. The average temperature in Ulaanbaatar is -3.7°C (25.3°F) in January and 18.1°C (64.6°F) in July. Mongolia is an arid country, with an average annual precipitation of just 250 mm (10 in).

Mongolia is a land of extremes, with vast deserts in the south and snow-capped mountains in the north. The highest point in the country is the Khüiten Peak in the Mongolian Altai Mountains, which stands at 4,374 meters (14,350 ft) above sea level. The lowest point is the Hoh Nuur Depression in the Gobi Desert, which is 550 meters (1,804 ft) below sea level.

Mongolia is home to a wide variety of natural resources, including coal, copper, gold, silver, oil, and uranium. The country also has large deposits of rare earth elements, which are used in the production of high-tech products such as cell phones and computers.
