Mongolia is a landlocked country located in East Asia, bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. Mongolia has a continental climate, with long, cold winters and short, hot summers. The average temperature in Ulaanbaatar is -3.7°C (25.3°F) in January and 18.1°C (64.6°F) in July. Mongolia is an arid country, with an average annual precipitation of just 250 mm (10 in).
Mongolia is a land of extremes, with vast deserts in the south and snow-capped mountains in the north. The highest point in the country is the Khüiten Peak in the Mongolian Altai Mountains, which stands at 4,374 meters (14,350 ft) above sea level.
