The area has seen many different civilizations and cultures come and go, leaving behind a rich and varied history. Kratie is home to some of the most important archaeological sites in Cambodia, including the ancient temple of Wat Phu Krom and the ruins of the Khmer Empire.

The earliest known inhabitants of Kratie were the Khmer people, who arrived in the area around the 4th century BC. During this period, the Khmer Empire was at its peak and the region was an important hub for trade and commerce. The Khmer people were known for their intricate stone carvings and sculptures, which can still be seen in the ancient temples and monuments throughout the province.

In the 11th century, Kratie became part of the powerful Angkor Empire. The Angkor Empire was a powerful Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that ruled much of Southeast Asia for nearly 600 years. During this period, Kratie was an important trading port, where merchants from all over Asia and beyond would come to trade goods and services.

In the 15th century, the Khmer Empire fell and the area became part of the Siamese kingdom. After a short period of Siamese rule, the area came under the control of the French in the 19th century. The French established a number of trading posts in the area and developed the port of Kratie into a major trading hub.

During the 20th century, Kratie was an important part of the French colonial empire. The area was the site of many battles during the First and Second Indochina Wars. After the fall of the French in 1954, the area was briefly taken over by the Khmer Rouge before the Vietnamese army liberated it in 1979.
