Since then, the country has seen a number of different rulers, from the Chinese-influenced Brunei Sultanate to the British-influenced Protectorate of Brunei.

The earliest known inhabitants of Brunei Seria were the Dayak people, who were believed to have migrated to the area from the Malay Peninsula sometime in the 4th century CE. The Dayak were a hunter-gatherer people who lived in small villages and made their living by fishing and hunting. They were also known to have practiced some forms of animism and ancestor worship.

In the early 16th century, the Sultanate of Brunei was conquered by the Spanish. After the Spanish left, the sultanate was replaced by the British-influenced Protectorate of Brunei. This new government was much more lenient than the sultanate had been and allowed the people of Brunei Seria to practice their own religion and customs.

During the 19th century, Brunei Seria was a British protectorate and was heavily influenced by the British. This period saw the introduction of Christianity, as well as a number of other western influences. The country was also opened up to foreign trade, which allowed for the growth of the economy.
