Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Uganda: A History, Amazing Facts and Things to Do
Nestled in the heart of Uganda’s Nakasongola district, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (ZRS) is a haven for African rhinos and a major tourist attraction. History
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 by the Rhino Fund Uganda (RFU) with the support of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). It was established in an effort to restore the once-thriving rhino population in Uganda. Before the sanctuary was established, there were no rhinos in Uganda for over 30 years due to rampant poaching.
The first rhinos were brought to ZRS in 2005 and the population has steadily grown since then. As of 2021, the sanctuary is home to 21 rhinos, including 18 southern white rhinos and three black rhinos.
